Organic head lice treatment using essential oils

If your children are suffering with head lice you may want to reconsider using traditional treatments for dealing with infestations. Many shop bought products contain agricultural pesticides such as lindane, malathion and others you probably wouldn’t want to expose your children to if you knew the potential dangers.

It is, in fact, pretty easy to make your own effective organic treatment at home using a blend of organic vegetable oils such as apricot kernels, sweet almond or olive and essential oils including tea tree, eucalyptus and lavender.

Blend two drops each of organic tea tree, globulus eucalyptus and lavender essential oils and dilute to 10% in your chosen vegetable oil. Massage into the scalp and down the hair strands. Comb out then wash as normal. You’ll see the carnage of lice floating in the bath. The vegetable oil suffocates the lice whilst tea tree, eucalyptus and lavender essential oils are known for their insect repellent and anti-bacterial properties. This is also a great way to condition the hair.

Follow this by blow drying your child’s hair. Lice don’t like high heat.

If you’d rather not use vegetable oil in the mix you can always add the essential oils to a bottle of your child’s shampoo, diluted to 10%.

To dilute to 10%, for 6 drops of essential oil add 60 drops of vegetable oil or shampoo.

In order to prevent any further infestations, apply your home made organic head lice treatment on a monthly basis.
